Low, Medium, and High Voltage

Handling electricity is very dangerous! An untrained person can cause a great amount of damage to appliances and wiring including an electrical fire if great care is not taken. More importantly, there is a risk of serious injury to the person handling the electricity including death. DOC Services, Inc. will take that concern away. We have highly trained electricians who know how to handle the voltage that is coming into your home or business.

Most people do not understand what voltage is. Voltage is the rate at which electrical energy is from a source that provides the flow of electricity into a circuit to the electrical appliance. There are three common types of voltage that every home or business has to deal with.

Types of Voltage

Low Voltage – Most household appliances run on low voltage. They typically run on 110 volts. Larger appliances like stoves, electric clothes dryers, central air, and hot tubs run on 220 volts. There are even some home applications that run on much lower voltages like doorbells and smoke detectors. Low voltage by definition is electrical service that is less then 1 kilovolt.

Medium Voltage – Medium Voltage is typically in the range of 1 kilovolt to 38 kilovolts. This type of voltage can be found in power distribution to large facilities, apartment and condo complexes, and neighborhoods.

High Voltage – This type of voltage is to supply a town. High voltage is primarily the power that comes from the power plant directly to a main distribution point, like a city. High voltage is defined as 46 kilovolts to 230 kilovolts.

All of these types of voltage are extremely dangerous to work with. Our professional electricians at DOC Services Inc. know voltage and the proper way to handle it and are properly equipped to work with it.
